Hey all,

Just got back from a long weekend in Louisiana. Peter Hyde, my
accordion maker from Australia, is here visiting me for a couple of
weeks, and we went to south Louisiana to take in the cajun music and
culture. We stopped by a cajun accordion builder's shop on Friday so
that Peter and he could enjoy some chat, and the man was beyond
rude. As soon as Peter was introduced as a builder of accordions,
the man visibly shut down. It was unreal. In the meantime he had
been waiting on other people who were visiting the shop, and this
woman came out from the back to bring some bellows - and from the
looks of it, she is the builder of the boxes - or the person who puts
them together anyway - there is no way he lifts a hand toward
building a box dressed in church clothes. He told us he could not
wait on us - one of us was buying a CD - he said he had some
accordion repairs to do - and he sent the woman out to take our money
and disappeared into the back. Later that evening we were discussing
this at a restaurant and were overheard by the locals. The next day,
we went back to the Saturday morning jam, not by choice, but by
force, by one who was with us and had one of his boxes (her boxes),
and he completely ignored us, though he was quite friendly with
everyone else who was there. The moral of this tale is just that he
is not building these boxes - though he takes the credit. That was
obvious to us, and if any of you are thinking of purchasing a cajun
box - go elsewhere - get your box from someone who is not a liar and
a fraud. Go have a good time in Louisiana - we know some good places
to stay, great places to eat, and some cajun clubs to avoid!

Kind regards,
Kay

How can we avoid this person if you don't tell us who he is? There are
quite a few accordion makers in Louisiana. Are you suggesting we avoid them
all to be on the safe side? BTW, it's no secret that quite a few of the
accordion makers in Louisiana have employees who help them build the
accordions. It's the only way they can keep up with the demand.

Not sure about part of your observations but if it is who I think it
is..I will concur with the overt rudeness.. three times over the
years on the phone when he had no idea who I was...tried to buy an
accordion.. asked to have a box tuned..wanted to know if he also sold
3 rows..and snubbed at a concert when buying a CD...incredible...

It may not be fraud per se. Some folks just aren't "people people" and
aren't comfortable talking to customers, especially when it seems likely
to become an extended conversation and most especially when there's a
quick sale at the other end of the table...

(I know of one character who just about killed his business because,
while he was competent, we was also a curmudgeon who hated talking to
anyone and made everyone hate talking to him. He's now scraping by
selling the product for half what it's worth because nobody trusts him
to provide customer support. As far as I can tell, this wasn't a matter
of "fraud", just of someone who should have stuck with wholesale since
he's his own worst enemy when it comes to retail.)

Couldn't help chuckling over your use of the word "curmudgeon". The
Milwaukee Police Department and local TV stations refer to those
who don't pay their parking tickets as "curmudgeons" Sounds like
we're back in the medieval days!

I assume you mean "curmudgeon" in the sense of Andy Rooney or Mark Twain
rather than "Milwaukeean parking scofflaw."

After discussion with cajun players, I will concede that the man is not
fraudulent, since most all cajun builders are mainly assemblers - assembling parts
that are made elsewhere - and this is a well known fact by most people buying
a cajun box. I assumed they cut their own wood, as other builders I am
familiar with. The fact that he was overtly rude still remains, and the next time
we go to Louisiana we will call ahead and find a box maker who will welcome us
with kindness.

That's pretty funny considering Kay IS talking about Marc, the first and most respected cajun box repairman and builder.

Speaking of the first cajun box builder, I wonder who was the second. Elton Doucet perhaps?
