Discussion:
Hohner Electravox - help needed!

I've just bought a Hohner Electravox from a second hand shop. It was
quite cheap so I thought I'd take a risk by ignoring the fact there
was no power adaptor or lead with it. Unfortunately, I underestimated
the problem and have no idea how to plug the thing in now even to try
it out!

There is only one socket which is something like a large 7 pin din
socket. I presume that this brings power in and also sends the sound
signal out? Though without having used one of these before I don't
know whether it is then processed outside the machine or in the box
itself.

Basically, I'd really appreciate any info anyone has on this machine.
I'm a keen accordion (acoustic version!) player and would love to be
able to try this electric box out, particularly if it means I can play
the accordion with headphones - (I'm sure the neighbours would thank
anyone also for any info that might facilitate that!)

thanks,george

I don't own one but I've played one at the musicians swap shop in
Melbourne Oz, It should come with a box, which that large plug on the
accordion runs into, which interprets the signals from the accordion,
you then need to plug this box into an amp to get any sound.

I don't like your chance of getting it working without that box, unless you
happen to know an electrical designer :-(

Oh dear! I thought the missing box was just a power supply, or at most
some kind of pre-amp.

In that generation of instruments, I _think_ all the electronics was
external and the instrument just carried the switches.

If so, someone *may* have designed a scanner-and-MIDI-converter that
works with the existing keyboard switches. If so, you may be able to
find the schematic. Then if you know someone who would be willing to
build it for you... And of course there's the still question of whether
all the switches are still good.

If not, doing a standard MIDI retrofit on that chassis might be your
best bet.

So I wouldn't give up just yet... but I'd say you now know why you got
it cheap.

You probably will not be lucky to find rest of the equipment needed to make
it work.

Even if you find it, you have to be sure that an internal electronics in
your accordion is working as well.

The best way , is to remove an old electronics and install a new MIDI system
in the same accordion.

Try contacting Hohner. They should be helpfull in getting you a
schematic, advice or other information you may need to make a
decision.
